Success Story – Chanda Khoun

23 June 2020

What course did you complete? When? Tourism, Travel and Airline Industry Level 3, Tourism, Hotel and Airline Operations level 4 in 2017 and graduated with my Diploma in Tourism and Travel Management Level 5 in 2018.

Did you always want to be a check in the travel industry?

Growing up I always knew I wanted to land a job working for an airline. Whether I’d be stationed at the airport or in the air flying, either or would be a blessing. After completing my studies and learning the roles more thoroughly I thought that the best fit for me would be to build my customer service skills by working for an airline based at the airport to help me grow.

Why did you choose a course at NZST?

I chose to study with NZST because I’ve always wanted to be in the tourism industry. I feel it is an industry that always implements changes to better our country. An industry where there are never-ending opportunities and who else would be a better fit to help me in this area than NZST? I also thoroughly enjoyed the duration of the courses. It gives students the benefit of getting their qualification in a shorter timeframe, and getting straight into the real world, and putting what they learn into practise.

How has your course at NZST helped you in your current role or career?

My course has helped put me in an advantageous level in comparison to others that were fresh to the role. I was one step ahead with my knowledge of Airline operations and Terminology, as well as industry jargon. It helped me to be confident and proud, knowing I was taught and supported by trainers with such a vibrant and rich background in different areas of the industry. All their stories and advice is embedded so that I am effective everyday in the workforce.

Where are you working now?  And what is your role?

I am currently working for Virgin Australia as a Ground Support Officer.

What does your work involve?

Daily I check-in passengers for their flight, manage the arrival and departure gates, as well as assist them with any queries. My job also involves the operation of the Virgin Australia Lounge.

What is the most exciting aspect of your job?

The most exciting part of my job is meeting and being able to interact with people from all over the world. Also being able to learn something new every day. Working in a busy and always on-the-go environment makes my day exciting as no day is the same.

Did your course at NZST live up to your expectations?

The course went above and beyond my expectations. Every course I completed were exactly what they sold and promised to me prior to commencing.

What were the highlights of your course?

I met some amazing individuals at NZST who went from being classmates to friendships that I am still surrounded by, even though we’ve gone separate ways. All trainers that taught me were one of my number one highlights. They are so supportive and are always willing to go above and beyond to ensure each student is okay and happy. The environment was also something I’ll never forget. Everyday the learning was exciting as well as the engagement which pushed you to turn up every day and want to learn more.

What is one of the lessons you’ve learnt through your experience to date?

You must work hard if you want to achieve something, but if you want to be successful you must work harder. Through my experience I learnt the importance of ‘Teamwork’. A quote which got me through my studies is “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”. This quote stuck with me to where I am now. Teamwork between my trainers, myself and my peers got us all to where we are today, and I am so thankful for all the support the team at NZST Wellington has given me.
