Reimagine tourism and travel in the future - Meet Samuel Stowers

29 October 2021

Coming from a culture that values appreciating the nuances in people and old school hospitality, Samuel was naturally drawn to the New Zealand School of Tourism to pursue his future career.

“The prospect of getting to know so many different people and cultures, for me, is the best part about working in the tourism and hospitality industry.”

As a proud New Zealand born Samoan, Samuel operates in day-to-day life with humility and respect at the forefront, and the belief that with passion and a good work ethic, he can really do anything.

“My parents didn’t have as many options as me when they were younger. Looking after my siblings and I was their priority. I’m honoured to be their legacy and to live out their vision for a better life.”

Samuel’s parents couldn’t be prouder, as he has just landed an eight-month placement as a Server Assistant with Fairmont Chateau, a luxurious 4.5-star resort in Whistler Canada.

Tucked away in the Blackcomb Mountains of British Columbia, Samuel will learn the tricks of the trade in what looks like paradise. With three Fairmont Chateau managers named in the Top 30 under 30 Awards* Samuel is confident he will be learning alongside the best of the best in the industry.

A combination of classic elegance and modern alpine, with the addition of a championship golf course, it is no wonder Fairmont Chateau was named the best resort in Canada*.

“I operate with the belief that jumping headfirst into new experiences is the best way to make mistakes, learn and grow. It’s got me this far and now I get to work at the best resort in Canada!”

Although Samuel isn’t set on a particular role yet, having previously completed an internship with Crowne Plaza and spent years as a bartender at a variety of city locations, one thing is for sure, tourism and hospitality is where he wants to be.

Samuel says he is grateful to have the opportunity to get outbound work experience during a pandemic, with the support of NZST and growing vaccination rates.

Auckland born and raised, Samuel will get to see snow for the first time, explore the famous surrounding ski fields, broaden his horizons, and continue to make his parents proud.

Samuel graduated with a Level 6 Diploma in Tourism and Travel Management and will be leaving to start his placement with Fairmont Chateau Whistler in Canada later this year.
