5 November 2025From Study to Swissport: NZST Graduates Take Off in Aviation Careers

Two NZ School of Tourism graduates, Liah and Bernie, have turned their journey at NZST into thriving careers with Swissport, one of the world’s leading ground services providers. These two graduates are proof that perseverance, confidence, a strong support network can get you to your dreams.

Liah Tuavao: Excelling with Jetstar and American Airlines

After completing her the level 5 Tourism Diploma at NZST, Liah joined Swissport as a Passenger Customer Service Agent for Jetstar and Amercian Airlines

“The airport environment is always changing - no two days are the same,” says Liah. “I love being part of a team that keeps everything running smoothly and ensures passengers have a positive experience.”

Recognising her professionalism and commitment, Swissport selected Liah for advanced training with American Airlines. The additional eight-day programme equipped her with skills in premium passenger handling, international documentation checks, and strict operational protocols.

Liah balances a demanding yet rewarding dual role of morning Jetstar shifts and afternoon American Airlines shifts, six days a week. Liah’s adaptability, time management and attention to detail have been key to her success.

“Working across two airlines challenged me to be organised and adaptable,” she explains. “Each airline has its own systems and standards, so teamwork and focus are essential.”

Liah credits NZST for giving her the foundation to succeed.

“NZ School of Tourism gave me the confidence to pursue this career,” she says. “Now I get to put those skills into action every day - helping people travel safely and happily.”

Pona Bernie Vili: Overcoming Challenges and Finding Purpose

For Bernie the journey to Swissport was one of resilience and personal growth. She enrolled in NZST’s Level 3 Tourism Certificate - a decision that would change everything.

“Halfway through Level 3, I struggled with attendance and felt like giving up,” Bernie recalls. “That’s when my tutor Vinay talked to me and helped me keep going. He wants nothing but the best for all his students.”

With encouragement from Vinay, Bernie completed Level 3, then continued to Level 4 Flight Attending and later the Level 5 Tourism Diploma.

“My tutor Donna was incredible - she always checked in and reminded me to stay focused,” says Bernie. “She helped me achieve my goals and shaped me into the person I am today.”

Bernie applied for a Customer Service position at Swissport and was accepted.

“After my interview, Donna called to ask how it went. I said, ‘I got in, Donna.’ She told me, ‘NZST is your home,’ and it truly is.”

Bernie says NZST’s focus on professionalism and career readiness prepared her for every step of their journey.

“Everything I aimed for while studying at NZST is here at Swissport,” Bernie reflects. “My tutors taught me to be work-ready and world-ready.”

Grounded by her Samoan upbringing, Bernie adds,

“My parents always remind me, ‘Faamuamua le Atua, ma toaga e tatalo e manuia ai lou aoga’ and ‘God is always good’”.

Proudly helping students find fulfilling careers

Both Liah and Bernie are shining examples of how NZ School of Tourism helps students build confidence, resilience, and real-world skills that open doors to exciting global careers. Their success stories at Swissport reflect the heart of NZST’s mission - empowering graduates to thrive in the aviation and travel industry, wherever their journey takes them.
