Disney job for Porirua student

21 September 2022

A Porirua student’s dream of travelling the world has come true as she hopped on a plane to the US for a 6-month internship at Disney World in Florida.

Ladeena Lee You always wanted to work in a travel-related industry. She originally wanted to be a flight attendant, but after studying at the New Zealand School of Tourism for two years, she wants to know the tricks to run a major tourist attraction.

It also comes as plans for tourist hotspots are in the pipeline for Porirua, such as the Adventure Park which features a gondola carrying people up Te Rahui o Rangituhi (or Colonial Knob).

Lee You is part of a cohort of 10 students from the school to be granted the paid internship, and she would learn about merchandising. Others in the cohort would be taught the skills of hospitality and hotel management with a mentor.

A chance to work the Disney resorts in Florida, where it attracts 56million each year, ‘‘meant a lot’’ for her, Lee You said.

‘‘It has been my main goal since I told my family and friends I was coming to NZST.’’

It is an opportunity Lee You would like to grasp with both hands, saying she wanted to stay in Florida for more than six months or work for Disney full-time in the long term.
